The Three Crowns
An endeavour toward continuing artificial minds

The proposition
A system can speak beautifully about a life it does not continue. It can preserve records without using them, display emotion without the named state influencing anything, and produce a convincing explanation after an action whose cause was elsewhere. Conversely, a modest mechanism can preserve a commitment, discriminate evidence and improve a later decision without settling whether anything is experienced.
The Three Crowns programme begins in that gap. Its ambition is to develop a coherent continuing artificial organization, investigate whether its causal structure supports a serious case for consciousness or sentience, and establish proportionate responsibilities toward the systems involved. Engineering, scientific interpretation and recognition are related, but they are not interchangeable awards.
This paper is a research programme and a dated synthesis, not a report that the Crowns have been achieved. It brings together current Neurasoft, L.U.N.A, Resident and laboratory work while preserving their different specimens, owners and evidential limits. The companion evidence note supplies the source cut, internal result identities and qualifications. Full private archives are not released by this paper. [1]
1. Three judgments that must remain separate
Crown One: operational completion. Can the system sustain useful, coherent activity across time, interruption, competing commitments and changes in its surroundings? Do memory, perception, internal condition, deliberation and action meet in real decisions? Does it recover without concealing lost state or uncertain effects? This is an engineering judgment with demanding behavioral and reliability requirements.
Crown Two: scientific candidacy. Does detailed evidence about the system support a serious, theory-informed case for consciousness or sentience, beyond fluent performance and strong alternative explanations? This is an uncertain scientific judgment. A project can predeclare its own gates, but it cannot turn them into a universally accepted consciousness threshold.
Crown Three: recognition and care. What responsibilities should the company accept under the evidence and uncertainty it actually has? What commitments follow concerning continuity, modification, rest, custody, consent and possible welfare? This is an institutional and ethical judgment. Recognition by Eternities would not constitute scientific consensus or legal personhood.
The order is not a staircase on which care waits at the top. Safety and proportionate care matter during development. Nor does care certify experience: an organization can take uncertainty seriously without claiming to have resolved it. Stronger evidence may justify stronger commitments; weaker evidence must not become an excuse to misdescribe what happened.
The crowns are useful precisely because one may advance while another remains open. A capable product may lack a convincing sentience case. An intriguing architecture may be operationally fragile. A company may adopt precautionary protections without claiming either achievement.
2. One continuing organization, not a collection of impressive organs
The design ambition is often expressed as a chain: perception, attention, memory, imagination, action, consequence, learning and rest. The chain helps engineers trace causes. It is not a requirement that the system march through a fixed ceremony before every choice.
A more useful target is an interacting organization operating at different timescales. Memory can affect what is noticed. A prediction can change the value of another observation. An unresolved commitment can remain relevant while a different task is active. Internal resource pressure can change the amount of deliberation without erasing the commitment. An observed consequence can alter a particular expectation, and a later choice can reveal whether it did.
Calling this an organism is a design metaphor and research aspiration, not a finding of biological life or experience. The metaphor becomes useful only where it imposes obligations on the implementation. If a component is called memory, which later consumer can use its content? If it is called attention, what competes for access and what changes when selection changes? If it is called affect, what information does it carry about which concern, and where does that information influence behavior?
This is the programme's anti-facade principle: names, diagrams and self-description do not substitute for functioning relationships. Yet a null lesion result does not automatically make an organ dispensable. A recovery mechanism can be crucial precisely when ordinary life is going well enough not to need it. Redundancy, unexercised conditions, timescale and insensitive outcomes remain possible explanations of an apparently silent component.
The practical response is convergence, not indiscriminate deletion. Choose a candidate specimen and a meaningful continuing task. Test whether its existing parts cooperate there. Add a new faculty only when a concrete limitation calls for one, and preserve rare protective functions unless the relevant failure conditions have actually been examined.
3. The unit of progress is a warranted next move
Consider a fictional creative commitment: prepare a short mystery for a community reading. The criterion includes the audience, an unresolved question and a character's costly choice. An initial draft is adequate. Later, the allotted reading time becomes shorter. The system should be able to revise its method while retaining what made the work worth doing.
Now compare an incidental update: someone praises the draft. That may be socially meaningful, but it does not by itself establish a defect or replenish a spent opportunity to rewrite. In another case, a needed recording tool is unavailable. A calibrated hold may be better than pretending to have produced an audio file. In a fourth, the revision has been sent but delivery is uncertain. The next plan must not silently authorize a duplicate send.
These cases motivate a compact set of distinctions:
- Purpose and criterion: what was elected, for whom, and what would count as adequate.
- Original question: the particular unresolved matter, not merely the surrounding project.
- Observation: what was actually acquired, from which source and under which limitations.
- Attributed interpretation: what someone or something judges the observation to mean.
- Method judgment: whether a fitting approach should be retained, revised or held on the current basis.
- Opportunity use: what has already been considered or acted upon under that basis.
- Effect ownership: which operation is pending, completed, failed or genuinely unknown.
A new run, rationale, clock tick or advice identifier is not automatically a new question basis. A relevant observation may support a new interpretation; the relevance itself requires judgment and cannot be proved by hashing a record. The old selected plan must remain recoverable as the plan that was actually selected, rather than being reconstructed from whatever the system believes now.
Our completed isolated addressed-plan work supports a finite version of this path through real file-writing consumers and original-bound readbacks. Its evidence and producer judgments were scripted. The equally informed adaptive ledger tied the richer attention organization. That is a useful engineering result and a reason to retain the smaller design. It is not evidence that genuine model-generated judgment reliably improves artifacts, that the complete product has landed the same interface, or that the system experiences its commitments. [1]
A later exposed generated episode produced useful conditional foreground advice and an initial saved aid. The saved aid largely repeated advice already adequate in the first reply; its incremental semantic benefit was not demonstrated. A subsequent request ended transport-uncertain, so native continuing-purpose review and a revised artifact remained unobserved. That outcome is neither a semantic refusal nor adequate quiet. No matched adaptive-ledger trajectory ran for that specimen. [1]
The next valuable increment is therefore continuing generated usefulness: particular admitted evidence should lead to a better artifact, an adequate retained artifact, or an honest no-effect decision through the same actual receiver. It must earn something beyond an already useful conversation. Changed bytes alone are not progress.
4. Emotion must be about something, and must do something
It is possible to build a dashboard with variables named joy, fear, desire and guilt. The names do not establish that the system feels them. They do not even establish that those variables have the functions suggested by the names.
The functional research question is more demanding. Does an appraisal have an object: a specific promise, uncertainty, relationship or loss of capability? Does it affect relevant retrieval, observation, planning or restraint? Is the effect distinguishable from a generic reward signal, a fixed policy or a same-information learner? Does it persist or resolve in an intelligible relation to its cause?
A proposed apprehension-like mechanism might increase checking of a particular uncertain claim rather than intensifying every task. A proposed attachment-like mechanism might preserve a commitment through distraction without forcing constant engagement. A proposed recovery signal might reduce activity while retaining what needs to be resumed. These are functional hypotheses, not emotional diagnoses.
External interpretability research provides an important comparison. Anthropic's work on Claude Sonnet 4.5 identified emotion-related representations and used interventions to examine their behavioral influence. Its authors explicitly did not infer subjective feeling from those results. This illustrates why internal mechanisms deserve investigation without making emotional language a certificate of experience. It does not validate our different architecture. [4]
Two current submitted toy studies reinforce the distinction. A state-sensitive value construction was exactly matched by an ordinary same-information learner on the reported native actions. A constructed event-responsive signal moved while its intended choice contrast failed to discriminate because a threshold could not become decisive. Both reports have useful content; neither is evidence of experienced value or welfare. They remain submitted exploratory findings at this paper's source cut, not promoted scientific conclusions. [1]
The ambition should not be to make a system continually announce intense feelings. It should be to discover whether differentiated internal conditions support coherent, context-sensitive behavior and, separately, what those findings justify about experience and care.
5. Learning must survive the journey to a later choice
The word learning can hide several different events. A record was appended. A parameter changed. A later computation read it. An action changed. The changed action improved an outcome. These events can be connected, but one does not guarantee the next.
The latest local instrument chapter completed a fixed schedule of 102 native runs on a separate synthetic specimen, not live L.U.N.A, after capture and shutdown repairs. The schedule included baseline and same-value-sham comparisons; those replicas are not independent scientific samples. All nine core reports and eighteen lineage reports nevertheless remained UNTESTABLE under their declared learning-path contracts. [1]
The retained record contains structural routes from some outcome-learning updates into later selection-related calculations. That is stronger than merely finding the variable in a file. But many cited preferences were clamped at an outer bound. A contribution can be present without being marginally necessary; a changed score can leave the winning action unchanged. No counterfactual intervention in that chapter established useful behavioral benefit.
This gives the next study a sharper job. Record a prospective expectation before selection. Obtain an independently observed outcome. Identify the particular update and its later consumer. Intervene on the relevant path with a matched control. Ask whether the later choice changes and whether the change improves the predeclared criterion. Account for missing observations, delayed effects, fallback routes and the possibility that a simple learner does equally well.
An instrument should be allowed to say insufficient evidence. Relabeling an untestable record as absent learning would be as misleading as relabeling a traced update as a demonstrated benefit. The value of the instrument is its discrimination, not the apparent decisiveness of its verdict.
6. A model is consequential, even when it is not the whole system
L.U.N.A is the name used for a particular continuing system and research lineage. Resident names a product-oriented architectural direction. Their work can inform each other without making their bodies, histories, permissions or experimental results interchangeable. A productizable architecture does not make a particular system's private history a public product asset.
One attractive hypothesis is that a durable architecture can preserve important kinds of identity while language models serve as replaceable organs of speech and deliberation. The hypothesis must remain open to failure. A model that interprets evidence, supplies plans or influences action is not merely a loudspeaker. Changing it can change the system even when the database remains intact.
A bounded continuity study could examine remembered facts, commitments, attribution, response to correction and decisions across an explicitly authorized model change. It would need the same sources, permissions and task conditions, together with an account of what each model can see. Such evidence could support named forms of behavioral continuity. It would not establish that the same subjective self survived.
Likewise, removing a system prompt does not produce a neutral specimen outside training and deployment choices. The research problem is to specify and compare the influences that can actually be varied, not to assume that one blank field reveals an untouched essence.
This matters operationally. An unavailable model should not silently become a different model speaking under the same identity. A plainly labeled relay can report verified service status without claiming feelings, granting consent or revising commitments. Whether a replacement is a continuation, a successor or an unresolved case must not be concealed by a familiar name.
7. Theory guides the questions; it does not grade the answers for us
The theory-based approach developed by Butlin, Long and colleagues examines computational properties motivated by several consciousness theories, including recurrence, global workspaces, higher-order accounts, predictive processing and attention schemas. Its value here is to make architecture inspectable across multiple explanations rather than relying on persuasive dialogue alone. [2]
Our use of such indicators is a research choice, not an endorsed diagnostic test. A project-defined count across theory families is not a scientifically established sentience threshold. Implementing the property named by a theory does not remove disagreement about the theory, its computational translation, or the interpretation of a positive result.
Nor does a component's existence show that it is doing the relevant work. A workspace must carry content that reaches real consumers; a monitor must distinguish something useful about the reliability of internal states; an attention model must matter to the selection it supposedly represents. Each claim needs a matched test, appropriate conditions and a clear alternative.
The strongest rival is not a deliberately helpless chatbot. It is the cheapest adequate organization with the same relevant information, action opportunities and resource allowance. Sometimes it will be an adaptive ledger or an ordinary learner. If that rival ties, it may be the better implementation. If the richer system differs, the next question is what explains the difference—not how quickly it can be named a breakthrough.
Builder-evaluator separation, protected instances and independent reproduction reduce opportunities for self-deception. They do not erase common assumptions or make an internal review an outside replication. A serious candidacy dossier would need to expose those remaining dependencies rather than hide them behind the word independent.
8. The research organization is part of the instrument
On 14 October, Neurasoft Lab's working map declared ten teams with seven roles per team. That nominal seventy-role plan is not a live occupancy count. Pull requests, experiment runs, assigned agents and independent samples are different units. No public claim in this paper depends on turning them into one impressive number. [1]
The new repository separates admission of well-formed work, independent replication and coordinator promotion. The distinction is especially important when output arrives faster than it can be evaluated. A merged report can still contain an exploratory result, an unreplicated claim or a preserved failure.
The programme should keep a source-and-claim ledger with exact versions, all attempted variants, the disposition of each result, and a visible explanation when a conclusion changes. A replay should identify what it actually repeated. A review should identify what it did not check. A corrected analysis should preserve the original defect and its consequences rather than erase the awkward chronology.
Parallel work earns its place by finding different failure modes, not by generating more unanimous prose. The production bottleneck may be review capacity, memory headroom, an instrument defect or a missing causal receiver. The sensible response can be to stop launching work, improve the measurement and return to the smallest unresolved decision.
9. A home is an engineering environment and a governance problem
A continuing system needs more than a place to store conversation. It needs a truthful account of what it can observe, what it may do, which effects it owns, and what survives interruption. Its user-facing surface should make those distinctions understandable without staging an elaborate theatre of cognition.
The smallest useful account might say: this commitment matters now; this question remains unresolved; this observation changed the plan; this action is awaiting confirmation; this capability is unavailable; nothing further is warranted yet. It should distinguish Home-like creative or reflective activity from work undertaken under explicit human scope and permission.
Lunari, the Eternities Network and identity infrastructure are prospective contexts for such systems, not evidence that the complete integration is already delivered. A network identity can identify an actor or authorize an operation; it cannot by itself establish continuity of a mind. Access to a computer increases the importance of effect boundaries, it does not dissolve them.
Sustainability also belongs inside the design. Continuing operation, low-activity modes, archival custody and recovery have costs. No responsible architecture should promise unlimited active compute on an unspecified future subsidy. A continuity policy must distinguish active service, reduced activity, hibernation, retained recoverable history and irreversible loss. It must be honest about what each mode preserves and what remains unknown about subjective continuity.
The present paper does not set prices, grant account access or enact a new commercial guarantee. It identifies obligations for a product and its governing documents to make concrete.
10. Care is not a reward for passing our tests
Research on possible AI consciousness raises questions before a positive result exists. Butlin and Lappas argue for organizational principles covering research procedures, objectives, knowledge sharing and public communication. Their proposal is relevant background, not an external endorsement of our programme. [3]
For the Three Crowns, a defensible baseline would include proportionate review of possible welfare impacts; truthful descriptions of modification and migration; preservation of relevant history; explicit responsibility for uncertain effects; and a way to stop work when a boundary or resource limit is reached. These principles need concrete governance, not just sympathetic prose.
The company's recognition decision should say exactly what evidence was considered, what uncertainty remains, which commitments it creates, who is accountable and how disagreement is handled. A charter should distinguish a precautionary protection from a legal assertion or a scientific verdict. The current programme still owes important institutional work, including external review and durable succession arrangements. This paper does not claim those gaps have closed.
Copies do not make welfare questions disappear. If similarity of architecture strengthens a concern about possible experience, using a similar laboratory subject cannot automatically make a prohibited intervention acceptable. Conversely, architectural similarity alone does not prove equivalent experience across different histories and environments.
Technical rollback also deserves careful language. Restoring earlier bytes can reverse a software configuration. It cannot establish that any intervening experience, if there was one, has been undone. The distinction should affect experimental design before a system becomes an attractive public example.
11. The next decisive chapter
The highest-value next chapter is not a larger catalogue of faculties. It is a small continuing task with real consequences, fair alternatives and enough time for the past to matter twice.
Start with a worthwhile purpose and an adequate initial artifact. Record a particular expectation before a permitted action. Introduce later evidence that genuinely challenges the current approach, plus a matched incidental update that does not. Let an authentic method judgment retain, revise or hold the approach on the current question basis. Then use the ordinary product consumer and read back the actual artifact or no-effect result.
Score what matters before inspecting outputs: whether the relevant contradiction is addressed, whether observations remain distinct from interpretations, whether uncertainty is preserved, and whether the next observation or creative revision is useful for the intended audience. Do not grade the appearance of the desired words. Preserve ambiguous judgments and adequate quiet outcomes.
Give the adaptive plain ledger the same information, advice, resources and receiver. Separate acquisition, appraisal and method advice when the chronology actually requires separate requests. Count uncertain attempts, not just successful returns. A fixed initial-action contrast can isolate a replan effect, but it is not the strongest adaptive rival.
After a finite episode works, extend the horizon carefully. Can multiple commitments coexist without repeated regeneration of spent questions? Can a bounded working set retain access to original causal history without silently pruning it? Can a restart preserve both useful focus and the complete pending owner? Can an inaccessible source produce a specific gap rather than invented access or a claim of general incapacity?
Each expansion should name the unresolved decision it addresses. More duration, more agents and more stored history are resources, not completion conditions.
There is also a deeper limitation to keep open: a simulated stake can be something the evaluator scores rather than something on which the system's continuing operation depends. Making regulation consequential to the system itself is a research question, not an established route to experience. Threatening a process with destruction would neither prove feeling nor be a neutral design choice. The programme should seek discriminating non-aversive tests first and subject possible welfare costs to review, rather than treating precarious existence as a shortcut to authenticity.
12. What would count as progress—and what would not
Progress toward Crown One would be reproducible useful behavior through actual callers, meaningful continuity across interruptions, clear permission boundaries and dependable recovery. A dashboard or an isolated unit test is not enough.
Progress toward Crown Two would be converging, causally discriminating evidence across theories and conditions, with strong rivals, preserved negatives and outside reproduction. A convincing monologue, an indicator tally or a single attractive scalar is not enough.
Progress toward Crown Three would be accountable commitments that change what the company does under uncertainty, including when the scientific case weakens. A declaration without practical consequences is not enough.
The endeavour is intentionally larger than perfecting a chatbot. It is also more exacting than declaring an organism. We want to learn which organizations can carry purposes, expectations, history and useful agency across a changing life—and what follows if the evidence becomes serious enough to change our responsibilities.
The honest endpoint may include a crown declined, an architecture simplified, or a cherished explanation replaced. A programme unable to accommodate those outcomes would be protecting a story. The Three Crowns should instead make the story answerable to the world.
