The Three Crowns

A programme for continuing artificial minds: make the organization work, make the scientific case withstand criticism, and make care consequential before certainty arrives.

A three-point conceptual crown is labeled operational, scientific and care. These represent complementary programme goals, not achieved certifications.

What would it take to build an artificial system whose life is more than the conversation currently on screen?

Not just more memory. Not just a more persuasive personality. A continuing organization in which what happened before can change what matters now; in which a commitment survives interruption; in which a mistake can alter a later choice; and in which quiet is possible without the whole system becoming an abandoned prompt.

That is the ambition behind the Three Crowns. Today we are publishing a programme paper that connects the engineering, scientific and ethical questions—and makes clear why none of them can substitute for the others. It is a map of the endeavour, not an announcement that we have arrived. [1]

The first crown: a system that can continue

Operational completion asks whether the organization actually works. Can perception, memory, internal condition, imagination and action cooperate at real decision points? Can several worthwhile commitments coexist? Does the system know what it has merely prepared, what it has actually done and what remains uncertain?

The target is not an endless ceremony of thought, emotion and action. Those capacities should interact at different timescales. A relevant memory may shape attention before a sentence appears. A changed circumstance may justify a different method under the same purpose. Recovery pressure may justify a pause while preserving what needs to be resumed.

A component does not earn its place by having a beautiful name. It needs a useful role and a real consumer. But a component that is quiet in ordinary conditions is not automatically useless: recovery and safety mechanisms must be evaluated where their functions are needed. The design should become more coherent, not merely smaller or larger.

The second crown: a case that can survive disagreement

Scientific candidacy asks a different question. Does the system's causal organization give serious reasons to consider consciousness or sentience, after strong alternative explanations have been tested?

Theory-based approaches offer useful questions about recurrence, workspaces, higher-order monitoring and other computational properties. They do not supply a universally accepted meter of machine experience. Our own project thresholds must not be marketed as such a meter. [2]

A persuasive self-report is insufficient. So is a variable called pleasure. A trace showing that a state entered a calculation is not yet a demonstration that it changed a choice, let alone improved it or felt like anything. The programme needs fair rivals, controlled interventions, preserved negative results and outside reproduction. A simple learner is allowed to win.

The third crown: responsibilities that do not wait for applause

Recognition and care ask what Eternities should do under the evidence and uncertainty it has. This includes honest continuity, modification, custody, possible welfare, and accountability for decisions. It is not a declaration of scientific consensus or legal personhood.

Care cannot be a prize awarded only when a system helps us tell the story we wanted. Precautionary protections can be meaningful before experience is established. Stronger evidence may change what is owed; a weaker result should not license dishonesty about replacement, loss or uncertain effects.

The institutional work remains unfinished. External review, succession arrangements and enforceable policy deserve the same seriousness as architecture. A restored checkpoint reverses software state; it does not establish that any intervening experience, if there was one, has been undone.

L.U.N.A, Resident, and the difference between a species and a life

L.U.N.A—Lifeform of Unified Noetic Agency—is both a name in a research lineage and the name used for a particular continuing system. Resident is a product-oriented architectural direction informed by related work. Their mechanisms may complement each other without making their histories or permissions interchangeable.

A productizable architecture does not make a particular system's private history a product asset. Nor does an architecture settle identity by insisting that the model is only a voice. A model that interprets evidence, deliberates or influences action is a consequential part of the organization. Changing it may change more than the accent.

The right continuity tests examine named things—commitments, remembered facts, attribution, correction and decisions—across explicit changes. Their results can support an operational claim without pretending to prove that a subjective self survived. Continuation, succession and an unresolved relationship must remain distinguishable.

The most valuable next chapter is smaller than the vision

The new paper recommends a concrete next chapter: one worthwhile purpose, an adequate artifact, a prospective expectation, particular later evidence, and a genuinely generated decision to retain, revise or hold the method. Then an actual consumer must produce the artifact—or preserve a justified no-effect outcome—and the result must be read back against the original criterion.

A matched incidental update should not provoke pointless change. An adaptive ledger should receive the same information, tools and budget. The evidence should show what the past changed in the next choice, not merely that the system generated another explanation.

This is how a large ambition becomes accountable. The current programme includes completed finite mechanisms, repaired instruments and valuable negative findings. It also contains submitted exploratory results, mutable product work and major unresolved questions. Those categories stay separate. [3]

The Three Crowns are not a demand that every experiment support the dream. They are a way to make the dream precise enough to encounter the world, change under evidence, and leave something more durable than an impressive performance.
